The much awaited SLFP - JVP Alliance agreement will be signed at an
auspicious time on the morning of January 20 at the BMICH. The SLFP and
JVP representatives reached this decision at a meeting held in Colombo
yesterday, a media release issued by the Presidential Secretariat said. A
joint statement issued under the signature of SLFP General Secretary
Maithripala Sirisena and JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva last evening
stated that such an alliance is essential to resurrect the country. UNF cracking in CMC by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The ruling United National Front camp in the Colombo Municipal Council
has begun to crack with the Deputy Mayor Azath Sally threatening to step
down. Plunging the UNF into deep crisis, two members of the Democratic
Workers Congress (DWC), an ally of the UNF have also threatened to resign
over the failure to resolve problems of Tamils. Government has not shut the door for compromise by Manjula Fernando The Government yesterday asserted that it had not shut the doors for a
viable compromise with the President, to come out of the present political
impasse. Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing yesterday Minister Prof.
G.L. Peiris said "We certainly have no desire to slam the doors
