Record drugs haul in 2003 by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) had seized a record 46 kg, 345 g and 570 mg of heroin worth over Rs. 92.7 million during 2003 and had also taken the number one drug kingpin in the PNB's 'most wanted list' into custody. This amount is only next to the record set in 2000 where the PNB seized 48kg and 509g, PNB statistics revealed. The number of heroin and ganja detections recorded in 2003 had also been the highest for the past five years with 11,424 and 8,692 respectively. The total of ganja seizures for 2003 was 72,820 kg. It was also revealed that the PNB, the main law enforcement arm in the fight against illegal drug trafficking and other agencies such as Customs, Excise and police divisions islandwide had together seized nearly 53kg of heroin valued at around Rs. 106 million. Detections outside PNB set a record in 2003 when Mulleriyawa Police took 2 kg and 740 g of pure brown sugar worth over Rs. 5.5 million. The Mulleriyawa detection entered the record books as one of the most controversial drug cases where the suspects revealed that their boss was an alleged drug kingpin known as Jesudasan. |
