Bloomfield, Colts clash in Premier final

by Chris Dhambarage

Two equally good teams Bloomfield and Colts Cricket Club will battle it out for the Premier League title when they clash in the division one cricket tournament final at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place starting today.

Although the two teams reached the final in contrasting style they have the talent and the potential to play under different conditions with a couple of real matchwinners in their ranks. Bloomfield collected maximum points by thrashing NCC with a tremendous all round performance.

Colts CC even though failed to beat Galle CC outright in their semifinal fixture they did prove themselves by compiling a massive first innings total of 683 runs. They certainly underlined their depth in their batting with even the tailenders making a substantial contribution towards their total.

Both teams are strengthened with the return of their Test players after the concluded series against England. Colts CC will have paceman Chaminda Vaas spearheading their attack and will join the trio of Dulip Liyanage, Eric Upashantha and skipper Jeevantha Kulatunge.

However Shantha Kalavitigoda one of their regular players is currently touring India with the Sri Lanka 'A' team and his place will be taken by Chaminda Mendis.

Bloomfield too will be minus three of their key players - dashing opener Saman Jayantha, all rounder Farveez Maharoof and batsman Thilina Kandambi all touring India with the Sri Lanka 'A' side. Incidentally Saman Jayantha cracked a superb century in the semifinals against NCC with Maharoof also making a significant contribution with bat and ball.

Even then Bloomfield will not be too disappointed because Kumar Dharmasena will return back to lead the side together with Sanath Jayasuriya who is expected to open the batting with Ian Daniel. But the cynosure of all eyes will be on inform batsman Tillekeratne Dilshan who impressed with a century and two fifties for Sri Lanka in the series against England.

Bloomfield were the runners up to Moors SC in last years final and this year they have already clinched the under 23 championship. In addition Bloomfield and Colts CC have also entered the semifinals of the Premier knock out tournament.
