Security Forces, LTTE increase cooperation by Ranil Wijayapala The Security Forces and the LTTE are working together and have increased cooperation to avoid incidents during the Mahaveer week celebrations, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily news yesterday. The tense situation in Mannar and Vavuniya over LTTE decorations returned to normal by last morning due to increased cooperation between the Security Forces and the LTTE, she added. Bragadottir said the LTTE has showed flexibility towards Security Forces' requests to remove some Eelam maps erected in certain Government controlled areas in Mannar, dispelling the tense situation prevailed in the area. Tension arose in Mannar on Tuesday, as the LTTE forcibly re-erected some cutouts, which were earlier removed by the Security Forces and handed over to the SLMM. LTTE members and civilians forcibly took those cutouts away from a SLMM vehicle around 9 pm on Monday. The SLMM on Tuesday gave them a deadline to remove those cutouts and the LTTE yesterday agreed to remove them, ending the tension in the area. "The two parties are determined to avoid any incidents during the Mahaveer Day celebrations and they are cooperating with each other and having regular meetings with SLMM facilitation," she said. The spokeswoman said the SLMM has increased patrolling in Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna districts. "We are trying to increase our presence as far as possible. We are hoping the celebrations will continue in a peaceful manner since the two parties are determined to avoid any incidents," Bragadottir added. |
