Security tightened in Colombo after businessman's killing by Sarath Malalasekera Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath yesterday morning directed his senior officers to strengthen and intensify security in the Colombo city to prevent suspects involved in crimes escaping after committing the deed. DIG Herath issued these instructions at the Bambalapitiya Police Station yesterday following the killing of Lingam, a Colombo businessman, suspected to be a close associate of an underworld gang leader. Police said that Lingam was killed on Monday night opposite a newly opened tourist hotel in Bambalapitiya Police area. The investigators found sixteen spent bullets of the T56 and 9mm revolver calibre at the scene of murder. Police suspect this to be a contract killing undertaken by a rival underworld gang. On an invitation of the manager of the hotel Lingam had come in a three wheeler accompanied by three others to attend the hotel's opening ceremony. While having drinks at about 12.45 am Lingam had received a call on his hand phone and had walked out of the hotel along with the manager, investigations revealed. As Lingam and the manager came out of the hotel a man wearing a mask had opened fire at Lingam. At this stage the manager through fear had closed the door of the hotel entrance but Lingam had been outside the hotel. The manager had heard several gun shots. Later when the manager and the other security staff of the hotel came out of the hotel they had seen Lingam fallen in a pool of blood near the hotel entrance. Bambalapitiya Police on the direction of the Senior SP Deepal Herath had cordoned off the area in order to collect available evidence at the scene. Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath is directing investigations conducted by Colombo Crime Division Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda, Crimes and Criminal Intelligence Director Senior SP Mahinda Hettiarachchi, Senior SP Deepal Herath and assisted by ASPs Siri Kumara, Wasantha Wickremsinghe, Chief Inspector Ananda Kumarasiri, OIC, Bambalapitiya and Chief Inspector Marasinghe of the Emergency Unit. |
