Free access to LTTE areas for truce monitors by Ranil Wijayapala LTTE Political Wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan assured Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Tryggve Tellefsen that they would take action to ensure freedom of movement for truce monitors in the LTTE controlled areas when he met Tellefsen in Kilinochchi on Tuesday. SLMM Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday that Tellefsen has brought to Thamilselvan's notice their refusal to access the controversial Wan-Ela camp by Trincomalee area leadership during this meeting. Thamilselvan has told Tellefsen that he would raise this matter with Colonel Pathuman, the LTTE area commander in Trincomalee, to ensure truce monitors free access to the Wan-Ela camp. Area leaders in Trincomalee refused to allow truce monitors to have a routine patrol in Wan-Ela camp despite their assurance to SLMM Chief during the meeting they had with him in Sampur two weeks back. Tellefsen has emphasised the necessity of ensuring freedom of access in the LTTE controlled areas, specially to the Wan-Ela camp, since there were complains from the Sri Lanka Army that LTTE cadres are expanding the camp. The SLMM Chief has told Thamilselvan that the SLMM ruling on Wan-Ela camp still stands despite it being referred to Norwegian facilitators and emphasized the necessity of having routine patrolling to the camp until the matter is solved. "Thamilselvan was positive on the issue", Bragadottir added. Thamilselvan has told the SLMM Chief that they would take action to expand the working hours of LTTE peace secretariat to enable truce monitors to contact them at any time. |
