Veteran cartoonist dead Veteran cartoonist Jiffrey Yunoos died yesterday at the Sri Jayawardhanapura Hospital. Yunoos who worked for nearly three decades as the cartoonist of the Aththa newspaper began his career as a cartoonist of the Thinakaran newspaper of the Lake House group. Yunoos used to portray key political figures in his cartoons. Among his various political caricatures was "Appuhamy's" character, which appeared in the Aththa newspaper and created a lot of humour among the public. Appuhamy was highly appreciated by his political friends and foes alike. He worked as the cartoonist of the Aththa newspaper until it ceased to exist. He also worked as a member of the Sri Lanka Press Council. The funeral will take place today (August 29) and the body is now lying at his residence at No.18, Prasanna Mawatha, Maththegoda. Guns for sale at retail shop A foreign made revolver, alleged to have been issued to a Minister of the previous regime was seized by Mawanella Police while it was lying at a retail shop for sale for around Rs. 40,000. According to Mawanella Police OIC Inspector Jayantha Pushpakumara, the Brazilian made revolver, "38 Normal" was recovered on a tip-off received that a revolver and another British made Wembly & Scott shot gun are for sale at a retail shop in Hingula, Mawanella. The owner of the shop had kept the two weapons in his drawer. The Police had launched an investigation assisted by the Defence Ministry and Police Headquarters to ascertain the legality of the weapon and to find its original owner, OIC said. |
