Thomians - Junior National waterpolo champions

The Junior National Waterpolo Championship was worked off at Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool on Sunday the 10th of August. The tournament was played on a knockout basis. S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia emerged champions beating Royal 'B' (17-0), Royal 'A' (5-4) and in the final Ananda (12-2) convincingly.

The quarter-final match against Royal 'B' was a cake walk for the defending champions. Rajeevan Nagarajah opened the scoring for the Thomians then went to score another two in the latter part of the game. Dhanushka Saram also scored 3 goals. Thanura Abeywardena, Lasitha Perera, Dhakshitha Thamanegama and Dhanushka Gunaratne scored two goals each while Dilan Perera, Chaminda Samaraweera and Dilshan Fernando contributed with a goal each.

In the semi-finals the Thomians met their arch rivals Royal College 'A' team. Rajeevan Nagarajah once again opened the scoring followed by a powerful seven meter shot by Lasitha Perera in the first quarter. In the start of the second, Royal scored off a penalty to move the score to a one goal deficit in the 3rd quarter Dakshitha Thamanegama scored two brilliant shots and Dilshan Fernando also added to the score with an excellent shot which put the Thomians in a commanding lead. In the final quarter the Royalists tried hard to equalise but the Thomian defence was too strong to penetrate.

The final was a very comfortable win for S. Thomas' against Ananda College the final score was 12-2. (Rajeevan Nagarajah 2, Dhanushka Saram 2, Chaminda Samaraweera 2, Thanura Abeywardena 1, Lasitha Perera 1, Nishantha Fernando 1, Dilshan Fernando 1, Dhanushka Gunaratne 1, Rajitha Yasaratne 1). Dhanushka Saram was selected as the player of the tournament.

The winning Thomian team: Thanura Abeywardena (Capt), Rajeevan Nagarajah, Lakshitha Kosgodage, Nishantha Fernando, Lasitha Perera, Dhanushka Saram, Dilshan Fernando, Zaffer Zainudeen, Dakshitha Thamanegama, Dilan Perera, Dhanushka Gunaratne, Chaminda Samaraweera, Rajitha Yasaratne.
