Two killed in car-train collision

by Sandasen Marasinghe

Two people were killed on the spot while another suffered critical injuries when a car collided with the Intercity express train from Kandy to Colombo at the Ragama level crossing around 8.50 a.m. yesterday.

The severely injured person had been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital. The car was dragged along the rail track by the train for 200 metres.

The car which came from the direction of Mabola had attempted to cross the level crossing from the right side of the road although the gate was closed. The driver had ignored warnings by passers-by.

However the driver had managed to evade the slow train from Colombo to Gampaha but his attempt to evade the Intercity train had proved futile.

The driver of the car was identified as Maurice Kumara (35) of Ragama, a garage owner. According to the Police Maurice had been on a test run at the time of the incident after repairing the car belonging to a person at Ragama. The other two were identified as residents of 2nd mile post Thambuththegama.

An identity card belonging to Madduma Don Dinesh Tharanga Priyadarshana (18) of 2nd mile post Thambuththegama was found at the scene. But it was not clear whether the ID belonged to the deceased person or the other person warded at the ICU.
