The Education ministry will provide a nutritious meal to all students in the five districts affected by the May floods, the worst to hit the country in 50 years, under the World Bank funded special nutrition programme.
"This programme is currently being implemented in three districts, Hambantota, Ampara and Moneragala due to its low nutrition ratios, by the Ministry's Education for All Unit," a spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. The meal would consist of either rice or a variety of pulses. According to the official this is the first step towards the Ministry's target to provide a mid day meal to all schoolchildren in the near future. At the moment students in the five affected districts, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota and Matara are receiving biscuits as a mid-day snack under the World Food Programme (WFP).
