Seetha Devi BV and Vijaya College win hockey sevens titles

Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy 'Greens' and Vijaya College, Matale, became champions at the Ninth Seetha Devi Boys and Girls Hockey Sevens 2003 organised by Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy and played at Police grounds, Kandy.

A total of 32 boys teams and 16 girls schools from the under 19 age group from all parts of the island participated in this tournament which was a tremendous success. Mayor of Kandy, Kesara Senanayake was the Chief Guest while Hafis Marikkar MMC and Upananda Jayasundera were the guests of honour.

In the championship for girls Seetha Devi Balika Greens who were the defending champions found things much liking to them and scored an easy 3 - 0 win over Yasodara Balika Vidyalya 'A' after leading 2-0 at the lemons. Centre forward Dilani Kumari was in fine form netting in two goals, while the third one was scored by right inside Saflina Yoosuf. Dilani Kumari, a junior national cap was also adjudged the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament (Girls).

S. N. Jayasinghe and Mohammed Hanafi umpired with S. Godigamuwa as the 3rd umpire.

In the semi finals Yasodara Vidyalaya 'A' beat Mahamaya 1-0 and Seetha Devi 'Greens' got the better of the home town rivals St. Anthony's Balika Vidyalaya 1-0. In the boys final Vijaya College, Matale continued their winning streak for the past fifteen months by edging out last year's champions Nalanda Vidyalaya 1-0 in a match which provided the sparks. At half time the scores stood deadlocked at 0-0.

Vijaya College scored their winning goal mid way in the second half when left extreme Asanka Silva drove in a scorcher which sounded the boards.

In the semi finals Nalanda beat Trinity 1-0 and Vijaya College edged out their home town rivals St. Thomas College, Matale 4-3 after a penalty shoot out, the scores remained scoreless at the end of the regulation time.

In the quarter finals Nalanda beat Christ Church 1-0, Trinity beat Isipathana 1-0, St. Thomas, Matale beat D. S. Senanayake, Colombo 2-1 and Vijaya College edged out St. Sylvester's 2-1.
