Evacuation of Kinniya camp: No change in situation by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) is continuing to put pressure on the LTTE for the evacuation of the camp since there has been no change in the situation regarding the removal of the camp in Kinniya by the LTTE by last evening. SLMM spokeswoman Agness Bragadottir said that the LTTE has not taken any steps to remove the camp as ruled by the SLMM but added they are optimistic the LTTE will remove the camp. "It will take two or three days for the LTTE to remove the camp completely", she added. Reports from Trincomalee however said that the LTTE has stopped the construction of the camp since the ruling given by the SLMM on Monday evening. The SLMM is conducting regular patroling in the area to see that the LTTE takes prompt action to remove the camp. According to reports there had been lesser LTTE cadres in the vicinity though there had been around 30 to 50 cadres there at the camp. The SLMM in its ruling given on Monday on the construction of new camp in Wan Ella - Kinniya stated the 'SLMM sees that it is important to point out that in order to maintain the atmosphere of goodwill between the involved parties it is necessary to act within the spirit of the Ceasefire Agreement. 'In order to achieve that it is expected that the LTTE will remove this new camp which is established in the GOSL area'. The SLMM after the verification of the camp's position, it was contended that Wan Ella camp is newly established and located in the government controlled area. "Therefore, it is a violation of the Ceasefire Agreement", the SLMM reported in its report dispatched to the LTTE and the Sri Lanka Army on June 30. |
