New Chief Sangha Nayaka Thera of Salpitihewagam Dekoralaya

The Most Venerable Borelle Athula Maha Thera has been appointed "The Chief Sanghanayaka of Salpitihewagam Dekoralaya in Colombo", with the honorary title "Sri Saddhamma Wageeswara Siddhartha Sri Medhalankara Wansawathansa" Ven. Athula is the chief incumbent of Athuladassana Buddhist Centre, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07 and Secretary Thibirigasyaya Pradeshiya Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya. There were eight siblings to Gonagalage Manisappuhami and Mrs. Ranathunga Arachchige Agnesnona. Among them, being the seventh, our Venerable Sir was born on November 18, 1959.

This child was admitted to Susamayawardhana Maha Vidyalaya at Borella for his primary education. Thereafter, he entered the D. S. Senanayaka Vidyalaya in Colombo for his secondary education.

This child who was very much devoted to the Buddhasasana (dispensation) was handed over to the most respectful monk Venerable Rajakeeya Pandith Makawita Sri Medhalankara Maha Thera, chief incumbent of Gnanodaya Purana Rajha Maha Viharaya and chief Sanghanayaka of Matara and Hambantota districts. Thereafter, he ordained this child under the guidance and the tutorship of Most Venerable Talalle Gnanalankara Maha Thera, chief incumbent of Bhikshugilan Madyastanaya at Chandraleka Mawatha, Borella and Siri Pawara Wijayarama Rajha Maha Viharaya at Ihalawela, Matara and the Most Venerable Talalle Piyarathana Maha Thera on Saturday 10 November, 1984 at Jayasekararamaya Kuppiyawattha, Maradana.

In 1985, he entered Viddyodaya Maha Pirivena and obtained basic education in Pali, Sanskrit and Buddhism at the feet of Most Venerable Akuretiye Amarawansa, principal for nearly three years and completed his education successfully.

As a mark of respect and appreciation of his noble service, Minister G. L. Peiris made him an All Island Justice of Peace. The Colombo District Sangha Sabhawa of Amarapura Siri Saddhammawansa Maha Nikaya has confered the title "Saddhamma Bhanaka Buddha Sasana Keerthi Sri Tripitakachariya" on him. The Ven. Athula will receive his (akthapatra) act of appointment from Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya at a ceremony at the BMICH, Colombo on June 7 at 3 p.m. while Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse will offer him the 'Vijinipatha'.

May the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem be with Venerable Borelle Athula Nayaka Thera for long life and good health to continue his noble services to the Buddhasasana.
