by Parliament Correspondents Minister of Parliamentary Affairs A.H.M. Azwer yesterday replying to an adjournment motion said that necessary action will be taken to arrest offenders who attacked a picketing of Assistant and Registered Medical Officers in the Central Province recently. He said that a Senior Superintendent of Police had informed that culprits will soon be arrested. Interior Minister John Amaratunga had also informed the DIG to expedite the investigation process, he said. PA MP Thilina Bandara Tennakoon moving the adjournment motion urged the Government to take action to stop harassing and assaulting public officers. Recently a group of persons had attacked Assistant Medical Officers of the Central Province. The Police Officers were also attacked. A person had tried to attack a Government Agent. A bomb was hurled at the Kesbewa Magistrate and Assistant Election Commissioner of Kandy was also attacked. Minister Azwer further said that two medical officers were injured in the attack. Provincial Minister Saliya Dissanayake was also accused in this incident. We will ensure the law and justice in the country. You were able to conduct a peaceful demonstration yesterday as we have already maintain law and order in the country. Edward Gunasekara (UNP): This is a timely motion. Recently I was attacked by a newspaper with false charges. They should not use the media freedom to attack public figures. I was so hurt because of this incident. PA MP Bandula Yalegama and JVP MP Dimuthu Bandara Tennakoon also spoke. |
