Can the European centre hold?

The continuing rift between the US and what US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld recently referred to, as "old Europe" is an ideologically and politically significant development as it, indirectly, signifies two different perspectives on the current global situation, particularly with regard to economic and social policies at national and global levels.
