The Indian emergency medical teams in flood hit areas have so far treated over 600 patients suffering from fever, dehydration and injuries.

The special medical team operating from the Kuruwita army camp in Ratnapura district, assisting the local authorities to distribute food and medical supplies, have treated the most number of cases, Indian High commission sources told the Daily News yesterday.

The teams which went over 25 kilometres up the rivers have rescued several people including children who were stranded.

The Indian naval divers are also carrying out evacuation operations and assisting the local authorities in food distribution in the Matara district where an estimated 5000 have been marooned.

The medical teams are now in the process of setting up forward medical camps in Potupitiya, Dombulwala and Palawala in the Ratnapura district, Neluwa, Hiniduma, Udugama and Baddegama in the Galle district and Deniyaya, Kotapola, Urubokka and Katuwana in Matara district where the worst affected are living.

Two advanced dressing stations have been set up at Galle and Matara.
