by Sarath Malalasekera The Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City associated with the Rotary Club of Leichhardt, New South Wales, Australia donated a three-million-rupee worth vehicle for the use of the Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association (SLANA) at a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel recently. President of the SLANA K. S. Sridhara receving the vehicle thanked the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City and Roatary Club of Australia for their kind gesture in donating the vehilce which will be used as mobile life education unit mainly to eradicate the hard drug menace from the country. This vehicle will be moving on the Colombo roads very soon and will visit the villages too, he said. The SLANA President paid a glowing tribute to Dr. Hilary Lindsay and her husband Lindsay and Yvonne Fernando for coming all the way from Australia to participate in the ceremony. He also thanked the director of Community Services Lucky Peiris, his project team and all the Rotarians who have contributed to make this event a reality. Rotary Club Colombo Mid City President D. Narain said that drug abuse is on the increase in Sri Lanka and satistics revealed by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board is rather alarming and the most worrying factor is that drug abuse is spreading among schoolchildren and teenagers. The SLANA is working tirelessly to achieve a situation where the public at large work effectively with all concerned agencies to eliminate drug related problems. The destruction caused by drugs cannot be estimated in terms of money or material. The suffering of the addicts, the agony of the family, the ill effects on the community and the great burden on the country are all results of drug abuse, Narain said. "We, the members of the Mid City in particular and the Rotarians of our District 3220 in general are proud to be assaciated with SLANA to help in the eradication of the drug abuse in Sri Lanka. Today is a very significant day for our club, as we have donated a Drug Abuse Prevention Mobile Unit to SLANA, fitted with the latest technology, to go around Sri Lanka and propagate to the masses on the ill effects of drugs and to rehabilitate drug addicts to lead a normal and sensible life," he added. SLANA Director Ms. Dharsani Guniangoda, Ms. Padma Mendis, District Governor N. Pathmanathan, Lion S. Ramachandran, Kumar Nadesan, Dr. N.H. Gunaratne, Asitha Gunasekera and Arun Tharper also particiapted in the ceremony. |
