While going through the numerous paper clippings in my file, I came across 2 cuttings -
1. Quacks vs Doctors by T.D. of Moratuwa dated 02.11.1996 and
2. Medical Quacks by my good doctor B.G.D. Bujawansa dated 10.09.1999. Of course as Dr. B. says a quack has no legal right to practise medicine and also has no moral right for recognition.
Be that as it may the amusing part of my letter is this T.D. of Moratuwa says that he had read in a popular daily on maintaining good health in spite of age, referring to "Symptoms of Kidney disease".
To quote him "Nocturia - passing more than usual urine at night. This signifies renal disease. I am at age 70 passing quite a lot of urine at night, which disturbs my sleep, and on reading this article I consulted my family doctor - a quack.
He had entered Medical College and due to some tragedy in the family, left the Medical Faculty but kept constant association with his Medical College friends and had discussed medical studies and read their notes etc.
My quack doctor listened to my complaint and said "Mr. D. you have been my patient for years and frankly you look alright for your age. My advice to you on the present complaint of nocturia is just this. Drink at least 6 glasses of water from the time you get out of bed until 6 p.m. every evening. Don't drink any water at all till next morning. After dinner drink only a mouthful and stop at that.
I followed my quack doctor's advice and since that date I sleep at one stretch from 9.30 p.m. to 6.00 a.m. and don't pass any urine at night. I have nocturia (milder version) but have never followed this remedy.
VERNIE DAW, Dehiwala.
In a small country as beautiful as ours (Sri Lanka), a small section of individuals and or parties lead by power hungry scoundrels are allowed to ruin and destroy everything that is brought about to uplift the welfare of the people and the country as a whole.
55 years of independence has brought us to nought and the rot which was begun 47 years ago (since 1956) was set in motion to continue and has now come to stay. Thousands like me were very strong, but are now, mere SLFP members, hoping that something good will happen to bring our party back to power.
But we must categorically state that the SLFP/PA will never ever be able to lift its head again until the Bandas give up holding the helm of power and as long as they have ties with the JVP villains.
People are hoping that the authorities will deal with these criminals and bring back this country to its glory to what it was 55 years ago.
But lo and behold, nothing seems to be happening, and the scoundrels have once again raised their ugly heads with some ministers of the present government too joining that band.
It's still not late and the appeal of the people is for this government to, even at this late stage, come down hard on these scoundrels and prevent the innocent people and the country from being destroyed altogether.
The people have given the UNP the mandate merely to do it. If you don't - then face the consequences.
No matter what position one holds, and no matter whether he or she belongs to government or opposition, he or she, must be brought to book and PUNISHED. Death penalty is good, but how long will it take to materialize?
So it is best to introduce legislation immediately, to chop off the hands of those found guilty of murder, rape, arson and robbery and expose them to the public, like in some countries where crime is minimal merely because of this particular punishment of chopping off the hands. By the time you have dealt with a mere 25 such cases, the rate of crime would diminish. Why not give it a try?
There is always a misbelieve that eating too many eggs will elevate the blood cholesterol. This is what most of our Doctors keep preaching to hyper cholestrolic patients. The American Heart Society has now after 30 years agreed that eating more eggs has not much effect on alteration of blood cholesterol.
The new research in America shows an egg a day is safe for even those who have high blood cholesterol. A public study made recently by the egg nutritional council presented to the American Heart Association has revealed this.
People with high cholesterol who watch their diet and have low fat levels can eat an egg daily without boosting blood cholesterol levels.
People with high cholesterol and high fat levels who ate an egg daily had a slight increase in cholesterol levels. It has also been found that those on low fat diet, eating eggs didn't make any difference even their cholesterol levels were high.
Research has also shown those who are having high cholesterol and high triglycerides are the only group of people who cannot eat many eggs as it will elevate the LDL cholesterol levels. All others could eat an egg a day without much risk.
Moving to the plus points of eggs, Egg is a best source of lutine which has also been found to reduce the risk of heart disease. The choline in the egg helps in the vitality of the brain cells. The caratenoids in the yolk reduces the risk of cataract.
Further the high quality of protein in the eggs also could reduce muscle loss in old age, while antibody production against diseases was also helped by eating eggs. So why wait eat more eggs and keep more healthy.

In this current era, articles could be seen demeaning the dignity of Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in the newspapers.
There are authorities to prove that we can praise and celebrate the Sacred Birthday of Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam limitlessly.
The Almighty Allah praise Himself the Holy Prophet in the Holy Qur'an as follows: "And surely, you possess the highest moral excellence" (Al-Qalam: 04) "And a Preacher of Allah by His permission and as a light house source (for the entire mankind guidance to the Day of Judgement)" (Al-Ahzab: 46) "Have we (Allah) not expanded your bossom for you?" (Al-Inshirah: 01) The guidance and sayings of Holy Prophet for praising Him:
"When the Holy Prophet went to the House of Amirunil Ansari Raliyallahu Anhu, he (the Companion) was describing the matters happened during the Sacred Birth of Holy Prophet to his Children and his family members, saying that today is the Day, today is the Day. Seeing this, Holy Prophet said that Allah has opened the Doors of Mercy for you happily.
He also said that the Angels are supplicating for Allah on behalf of you. Who do as you do, will be succeed as you succeed, narrated by Abu Darda Raliyallahu Anhu." (As-Silkul Muallam) "Remind the highest Moral of the forgone one of you".
(Abu Dawood) Therefore let's get together to praise and celebrate the Sacred Birth of Holy Prophet in every moment.

Reference the above it is a very good plan on paper, where one details the operation of the Police in an emergency. But in practice what really happens is common knowledge to most readers.
Let me ask one question from officers responsible for the operation of these services - has anyone of these officers tested the response of these services by telephoning and conducting a sort of a mock exercise!
Well of course when conducting this exercise one should not disclose one's identity, or else the whole purpose of it is lost.
In most developed countries regular monitoring of all emergency and rescue services are done by the authorities using what is termed 'the invisible victim'. Even Airlines, Hotels and Govt. institutions regularly check the services offered by their employees to their customers or guests by either telephoning or sending a selected person.
Let us hope at least our Heads of Departments start by checking how long or how soon the telephone operator answers when a call is made.

The discussion on the death sentence is continuing at the same time, the crime rate in the country is also going up.
Most of those who oppose to the death sentence are from Colombo, from affluent families, those who do not read Sinhala newspapers which basically report murder, rape and other crimes. So, those who read only English newspapers are ill-informed and should not write about the death sentence.
Most of the murders take place in remote areas where security is weak, where the people are helpless and poor.
The argument has been put forward that killing, even as a punishment, is bad and the society must rehabilitate those who commit murder.
But, for uneducated thugs, criminals and Army deserters, it is only the fear arising out of the death sentence that deter them from committing murder. No amount of "Bana" preaching will help.
Why only talk of the human rights of the murderers? Why silent about the murder and rape victims?
Remember, Rita John's case of Modera and the disappearance of students in Embilipitiya or Rev. Father Aba Costa of Negombo.
Death sentence has been in existence in this country from time immemorial. Everyone accepted that as a fact of life.
So why worry now? If you do not kill, nothing will happen to you. Religion should not be mixed up with politics or law and order.
I earnestly request the Government to enforce the death sentence without delay for murder, rape, drug trafficking and child abuse.
