by Ranil Wijayapala

Varathan the leader of the TELO breakaway group was shot dead by an unidentified gunman on Wednesday near Ariyanpattu hospital in Batticaloa in the Kattankudi Police division, Police said.

Varathan facing death threats allegedly from the LTTE, succumbed to his injuries after he was admitted to Batticaloa base hospital around noon on Wednesday, Police said.

The Police suspect that a group affiliated to the LTTE would have killed Varathan. Varathan's brother in another incident in December last year escaped with gun shot injuries after being shot at in the Batticaloa area.

Kattankudi Police are investigating the incident.
