The President said she for her part as Head of State, will give the people of Sri Lanka, including those who belong to and support the LTTE, the assurance that whoever may be the Government of the day, the process of seeking a peaceful resolution to our conflict will proceed without a pause. The President said they were of the view that whatever alliance and whoever takes office the fundamental rights of all Sri Lankans should be respected. The disrespect for such basic rights is the cause for all our woes said the President. She noted that the donor community has come forward to assist in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North and East. While pursuing this laudable venture, she would urge those countries that are now playing a role in the Peace Process, to use to the utmost, the special influence they are now able to wield to ensure that the human and fundamental rights guaranteed to all our people under the rule of law are safeguarded. She told the diplomats that she had on numerous occasions, too numerous now to recount, stated and emphasised that she remained firmly committed to the furtherance of the Peace Process, which she herself began in 1994 and continued with, in spite of hindrances and obstacles being placed in my way. |
