Fiscal Responsibility Act before Parliament soon - PM

Ananda Kannangara reporting from Matara

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a Janahamuwa in Matara yesterday pledged to the people that the loans taken for war expenses will be paid once the Fiscal Responsibility Act is brought before Parliament shortly.

We will then be able to divert all our financial resources towards the development of the country.

The Janahamuwa was held to coincide with a series of election campaigns concluded by all UNP politicians in the Matara district during the past three days.

The PM said that the Government is confident that the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the country will help the economic development and solve the unemployment problem to a great deal.

He asked why certain sections of the country are against peace and are trying to sabotage the peace process.

"Some sections among our people are against the war in Iraq but the same people are against the peace process in Sri Lanka.

"I appeal to every Sri Lankan to support the peace process, irrespective of their political affiliations," the PM said.

"Even the international community supports the peace process that is why many countries have pledged financial support to us to develop the country," the Prime Minister said.

"When Japan grants us aid at the donor conference meeting we will not only develop the North but we will utilise it to develop the entire country.

"The country is now experiencing a peaceful atmosphere and we must all work to strengthen this peace.

"Even the LTTE has accepted that holding elections in a democratic way is the best thing than going to war."

Power and Energy Minister, Karu Jayasuriya said that the Government has planned to introduce several development projects in the entire Southern province to create new employment opportunities. "Under these development projects we wish to set up a coal power plant to produce 300 megawatts and a crude oil refinery plant in the Southern province.

He said that the Government has already planned to expand the rural electricity project in the Southern district by spending Rs. 400 million.

"The proposed peace bridge between India and Sri Lanka will be constructed shortly. Then we will be able to further strengthen the country's economy.
