SLMM settles Navy-LTTE dispute by Ranil Wijayapala Seven armed LTTE cadres detained by the Navy in a government controlled area were released around 9 pm yesterday following the intervention of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), defence sources said. The Navy-LTTE dispute began when Naval troops spotted a group of armed LTTE cadres in an area 10 kilometres west of Kuchchaveli, Trincomalee around 1.30 pm. The Navy reported to the SLMM that the LTTE cadres had entered a government-controlled area with weapons, violating the ceasefire and refused to obey their order to surrender. The LTTE cadres had however opposed the Navy's claim, saying the area was actually under their control. There had been an intense argument between the two parties over the issue. SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland said SLMM officials in Trincomalee intervened to settle the dispute, advising both parties to act with restraint as an escalation of violence could endanger the peace process. |
