Woman claims LTTE abducted her son

A woman of Valachchenai who claimed that her teen-aged son had been abducted in January by eight unidentified men had subsequently identified two of them as LTTE cadres.

According to military sources, the woman on Monday had complained to the Valachchenai Police about the abduction of her 19 year old son from the house of a relative whom he had been visiting on January 23. She had provided the police with the names of the two cadres who are claimed to have been among the abductors. Both the woman and the Valachchenai Police have informed the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission about the incident.

Meanwhile, four Indian registered trawlers with their 16 men crew, who had been detained by a group of local fishermen at Pallimunai, about 15 kms north east of Mannar Town were taken into custody by the Police on Tuesday. They are to be produced in courts. In a separate incident police recovered 100 sticks of gelignite from two men at Uppukulam Bazaar in Mannar town early on Tuesday.

Military sources also reported of traders in the eastern Ampara district opposing an attempt by the LTTE to collect funds to erect a monument. According to them, traders from several areas in Ampara including Thirukkovil and Sinnakollan had been summoned to Akkaraipattu by an LTTE area leader who had demanded a monthly payment of Rs. 1000 from them to build the monument.
