Talks on political framework for N-E in December

A possible political framework for the North-East will be discussed at the next round of peace talks from December 2 to 5 in Oslo, Cabinet spokesman G.L. Peiris said.

The setting up of LTTE courts in the North and East will also be taken up at the next sessions of talks.

"There can be only one legal system in Sri Lanka and any court house outside that system is unacceptable," he said.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has given a clear directive to the IGP to take action to demolish all 'LTTE court houses' in government controlled areas.

In view of birthday celebrations of the Thai king the third session of peace talks has been shifted to Oslo. However, the fourth round will be held again in Nakom Pathon in Thailand from January 6 to 9.

The Japanese government has requested to host the sixth session of the peace talks in Tokyo in March, to which both negotiating parties have already consented. The talks will be followed by a much larger donor conference in Tokyo around May 2003.

Prof. Peiris said South Africa has also made a request to host one of the sessions. We have accepted their invitation as it would also be an opportunity for us to learn from their past experiences which are similar to our situation. This will be scheduled somewhere early next year.
