Sirath wins Lectra monthly medal
by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy sports correspondent reporting from Victoria golf links at Rajawella
Veteran golfer Sirath Kasthuriratne won the Lectra Monthly Medal for November 2002 when he secured 74 points in the golf competition sponsored by Lectra and Carlsberg worked off at the picturesque Victoria golf links at Digana, Rajawella yesterday.
This was Sirath Kasthuriratne's second win in the monthly competition which began in June this year and his earlier win was in September. He is also leading the overall Lectra medal position with 307 points followed by K. Hama with 267 points.
With the course bathed in sunshine following the recent rains, the lush fairways presented the participants with a new challenge, as ball was not running as in the past. In sharp contrast, Tony Witham, the Manager of the Victoria Club has retained his whippy greens which always lead to a potential birdie resulting in a 3 putt bogie.
The serious golfers of the competition considered this challenge worth the drive out from Kandy and Colombo and with sponsorship from Lectra and Carlsberg the prizes were an added attraction. The day's play saw the course once again running out as the winner with no one able to play to par, however Sirath Kasthuriratne, a name well-known at Victoria Golf Club has used his 30-years experience in golf to master this course and currently has it as his own, and has gone through an unbeatable month were club championships and the monthly medal are being chalked up against his name and 74 was the winning score and Sai as he is affectionately known led the club house from the start.
Following Sai home was Rohan de Silva (no connection to the motor racing maestro except they are good friends at business level) with 76 points. Rohan the golfer has always been a quite participant and a good sponsor at Victoria, was a popular runner-up. Often seen at Victoria with his son, he represents a good businessman and family golfer.
Chasing home for second runner-up position were Peter Bright and K. Hama at 77 points each. Often these two gentlemen have been involved in a count back. On this occasion Peter Bright bettered K. Hama, thus the field is still wide open in the overall competition. Carlsberg generously supported this month's medal competition so did Lectra with a fine sponsorship.
Sirath Kasthuriratne is a fine golfer with long experience in playing this sport in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Spain and France. He has also played Lanchashire League cricket before deciding to return home after a long stay abroad.
An interesting feature at this competition was the titanic struggle between father Thejan de Silva and son Dharshan de Silva and in the end it was the young blood of the son which emerged victor 78-86. In this competition it is the lowest score which decided the winner.
