Trelleborg Lanka in expansion program By Edward Weerasinghe, Kelaniya Group Correspondent Trelleborg Lanka (Pvt) Ltd plans to expand its light industrial tyre department. "The expansion program is being discussed at present and is expected to get off the ground before the end of year 2002," a company spokesman said. Trelleborg Lanka (Pvt) Ltd which commenced production with 70 employees, grew to a company with 450 employees and Trelleborg Wheel System Lanka (Pvt) Ltd has about 250 employees at present. Both factories have been managed by a steering committee headed by Stig Wanni as the Managing Director. The contribution made by Lars Larsson and Bernt Nilsson, two Sri Lankan Directors Lalith Pinto and Upali Herath also saw the company prosper in several ways. As a Company which believes in training and developing its most important resource of employees, the company has introduced various training programs conducted by internationally recognised conductors and also given opportunities to its employees to have international exposure in various fields, in other Trelleborg facilities in the world, the spokesman said. With a culture that recognised the team participation it helped the company to win a medal in the National Chamber of Exporters awards in the large scale category. Production at Trelleborg Lanka (Pvt) Ltd was started in early 1981 initially producing rubber master batches which were exported to Wurbain in Holland and Bergougnan in Belgium. The factory initially had a workforce of around 70 with an internal mixer (Francis show) for mixing compounds and 10 presses for tyre production. Tyre Production was started in May 1981 with 4-5 popular super comfort sizes and the first official order of tyres was shipped to Cheng Sing in Singapore in year 1981. In 1988 Trelleborg AB Sweden bought 100% shares of the Bergougnan Group and the identity of the Lanka factory was changed to Trelleborg Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. |
