The rusty old pedal car and the two little girls gazing pensively into the distance at Sarasalai in Jaffna symbolize the state of life in the Northern Peninsula. The past is battered by war and dysfunctional. The future mostly uncertain but lit by a glimmer of hope. All the high level discussions and negotiations that are imminent between the leaders of the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam may not interest these little ones right now. But the success of the negotiations will determine their future as well as those of their brothers and sisters throughout the country.

Migrant workers duped by middlemen : Lanka losing Rs. 40 b of expat earnings per year
