Two killed in grenade attack by Ranga Jayasuriya Two persons were killed by an armed group alleged to be members of the LTTE at Soruwila, Aralagamwila in the Polonnaruwa district on Saturday night, Police said. "A group of 25 armed men surrounded the house of LTTE deserter Thiagarasa Premadasa at around 10 pm and hurled a grenade killing Premadasa and a woman in the house," Police said. "There were no concrete facts to identify the assailants but the villagers said they identified the men as members of the LTTE," Police added. Premadasa had been accused by the LTTE of being an Army informant and collaborating with the Army since he fled the LTTE last year. The bodies of the two victims were lying at the Aralagamwila hospital. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission's Batticaloa branch said the SLMM had been informed only that "someone was killed". "We have no monitors in that area and were informed by the Police about the incident", SLMM spokesman said. "We have not yet commenced investigating the incident," he said. Asked whether it is a violation of the Ceasefire Agreement, if such an incident has taken place, he said "certainly yes" since armed LTTE cadres have allegedly entered a Government controlled area and killed two civilians. Article 1.2 a of the Ceasefire Agreement prevents either party from firing direct and indirect weapons and conducting armed raids, ambushes, assassinations and abductions. |
