Constitutional Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris called for the support of all segments of society for the peace process yesterday at the Akimoto Awards Ceremony.

"All segments of the society should be fully involved in the peace process. Religious and community leaders, University professors, business leaders and trade union activists should be involved in the peace process in a constructive way," he said.

"It must not be restricted to political speeches," he said.

Referring to the recent visit to Jaffna by the Colombo business leaders - who set up the Yalpanam business unit in Jaffna- which was followed by a similar visit to Colombo by the business leaders in Jaffna, Prof. Peiris said these acts of goodwill showed the emergence of a new political resolution.

Referring to Japan where he said the social and political culture avoided confrontation, Prof. Peiris said this was the secret behind the post second world war success of Japan. But in Sri Lanka, there is a culture of confrontation which has resulted in a dramatic polarisation of society, he said. The Akimoto Awards were awarded to the public and private sector organisations which followed Japanese management techniques called 5As.
