Susan George Pulimood memorial oration
The Pulimood Memorial Trust has organized Susan George Pulimood
memorial oration for the 22nd year with the support of past Visakhians.
It will be held at 5.00 pm on July 23 at Jeremias Dias Hall, Visakha
Vidyalaya, Vajira Road, Colombo 5.
The Oration is conducted in memory of Mrs. Pulimood who served as
principal for 22 years and was responsible for changing the direction of
education of Buddhist women, enabling them to achieve academic
excellence and serve the country in many diverse fields.
The Orator Prof. Gita Fernando is a past student who has excelled in
the field of pharmacology and will be speaking on 'The marvels of modern
medicine.'
New Information Ministry Secretary assumes duties today
New Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Charitha Herath
will assume duties in his new post at 10.30 am today at the Mass Media
and Information Ministry premises.
Prior to becoming chairman of the Central Environment Authority,
Herath was a senior consultant to the Ministry of Mass Media and
Information when Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa was Media Minister.
Stupa excavation begins today

The Archaeological Department will start excavating the ancient
Owagiriya Stupa in the Ampara district today on the direction of
Archaeological Department Director General Senarath Dissanayake,
Archaeological Deputy Director Dr Nimal Perera said.
The Owagiriya excavation project commenced on the directive of
National Heritage Minister Jagath Balasuriya last month.
A large Buddha statue was found at the site, during the first stage
of excavation, he said.
Lightning kills 42 year old

A man struck by lightning died on admission to Polipithigama
Hospital.
Police media sources said S B Nimalaratne of Moragoda, Polpithigama
was sheltering under a tree during heavy rains when he was struck by the
lightning. |
