Statue of St Anthony to be unveiled

A statue of St Anthony installed at Wattala Hendala junction opposite the Wattala UC premises will be blessed and unveiled by Most Rev Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith on July 7 at 6.30 pm. This statue, 25 feet in height is considered the tallest St Anthony statue in the world.

The statue of St Anthony in Padua, Italy which is 20 feet in height is considered the tallest such statue in the world so far.


Memorial oration

The Colombo Branch of the past Students' Association of Karaveddy Vigneswara College will hold a memorial oration on Prof. Karthigesu Sivathamby by Prof. A. Marks from Chennai on July 8 at 5 p.m. at the Sangarapillai Hall of the Colombo Thamil Sangam, Rudra Mawatha, Wellawatte, Colombo 6.

Former Labour Tribunal president and Attorney-at-law V. Vimalarajah, the author of the book 'Practical Guide to Labour Law' will preside.


Public talk

Prof. Y. Karunadasa will deliver a public talk in English on 'How best can we describe the Buddha Dhamma' at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on July 7 at 4.30 pm at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya. All are welcome.


New bus service

The Sri Lanka Central Transport Board commenced a bus service between Nuwara Eliya and Jaffna daily at 4 pm.

The bus will leave Nuwara Eliya at 4 pm and pass through Ragalla, Walapane, Athikariyagama and reach Kandy. It will leave Kandy and through the A9 road will reach Jaffna bus stand the following morning.

This new service after 30 years will benefit the people in the hill country to visit Jaffna.

The SLCTB has in addition commenced a day service to Colombo from Point Pedro.

The bus will leave Point Pedro at 7 am and reach Ratmalana the following morning.


Youth labour force to be set up

The Agriculture Ministry has planned to establish a youth labour force to develop the local fruit cultivation. The ministry aims to recruit 1,600 youths for this purpose. Accordingly, five men will be recruited from each divisional secretariat division in the Matale district.


Bus attacked

A bus belonging to Mahajana College Tellippllai was attacked with stones and the windscreen and side glass windows were broken.

The bus was parked in the courtyard of the college. Tellippllai Police are investigating.


Student succumbs to dengue

A Colombo University student, Thavabalan Kiritharan, 22, succumbed to dengue fever at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital recently. He was infected while in Colombo. He was treated at Kalubowila and Jaffna Teaching hospitals without avail.
