* Govt offers Rs 500,000 soft housing loan

Work in progress on the housing scheme

A housing scheme is being constructed in Omanthai for public servants in the Mullaitivu district in line with the government’s Jana Sevana housing project. Under this project, the construction of 640 houses is in progress. Construction commenced on September 24 last year with the assistance of several ministries including the Economic Development Ministry.

Each beneficiary is offered a plot of land of 40 perches by the government free of charge for the construction of the house.

The government also offers a Rs 500,000 soft housing loan with a grace period for every house owner to be utilised for the construction.

It has been planned to construct and establish welfare and other facilities within the housing scheme to provide facilities for the beneficiaries.

Supermarkets, schools, playgrounds, welfare centres, dispensaries, religious centres, community centres, communication facilities and many more welfare and common amenities will be available at the housing project. Public servants in the Mullaitivu district are likely to benefit immensely from this project, state sources said.
