More rain predicted

The atmospheric disturbance experienced off the western coast has intensified into a low pressure area and is moving away from the island.

Showers or thundershowers can be expected in several areas this afternoon and evening, Meteorology Department meteorologist- in- charge D A Jayasinghearachchi said.

He predicted wet weather along the Western and Southern coastal areas and Galle and Matara districts.

“Intermittent showers, strong winds and rough sea conditions can be expected in the deep and shallow sea areas off the Southern, Western and North-western coasts,” Jayasinghearachchi said.

He urged the fisheries and naval communities to be vigilant.

He also said there can be temporary localised fairly strong winds up to 80 kilometres per hour.Meanwhile, the maximum temperature of 34.5 celsius was reported from the Polonnaruwa district during the last 24 hours The minimum temperature of 12.2 celsius was reported from Nuwara-Eliya. The highest rainfall of 92.0 milimetres was reported from Kukuleganga.
