Pirivena teachers to teach foreign Buddhist monks

The government is planning to release the excess teachers who presently serve in pirivenas for teaching Theravada Buddhism to foreign Buddhist monks. These teachers would be released for overseas missionary service with full pay and other privileges that they presently enjoy.

Cabinet approval has been granted for this purpose. This programme is to be implemented to commemorate the 2600th anniversary of the Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi.

The Ministry of Education has also decided to offer Buddhist text books, robes and students' allowances to pirivenas in other countries, said Ven Kadigamuwe Dhammadassi Nayaka Thera, Chief Advisor to Dhamma Schools in the Kurunegala District.
