Beauty parlours to come under scrutiny
Nethali Struys and Disna Mudalige
All beauty parlours and cosmetic medical centres countrywide will be
checked within the next month to detect unregistered and expired
cosmetics, cosmetic devices and items, Health Ministry spokesman W M D
Wanninayake told the Daily News yesterday.
Investigations have shown that around 10,000 cosmetic, devices and
items are being sold throughout the country, but only 3,800 of them are
registered with the Cosmetics, Devices and Drug Authority (CDDA).
“The CDDA only gives approval to cosmetic items after ensuring that
they do not contain harmful chemicals to the human body. It is the
institution that evaluates the safety and quality of the cosmetic
products,” Wanninayake said.
“However, certain groups and individuals bring in low quality
cosmetics, devices and related items to the country from abroad without
adhering to the guidelines laid down by the CDDA, he said. “The flying
squad will also ascertain whether proper standards are maintained and
will check the date of expiry of facial products that are being used by
beauty parlours, as outdated products could pose a health hazard.
“A large number of young females who have barely two to three months
experience in beauty culture, run beauty salons at their residences
without realizing the gravity of using unregistered and harmful cosmetic
substances.
“The raids will begin by the end of this week and will be carried out
throughout next month. This is being done to provide standardized
cosmetic products to the public” he said.
