‘A spot fine will be imposed on persons who have neglected their surroundings, resulting in creating mosquito breeding places, said Western Province Health Director Amal Harsha de Silva at a press conference held yesterday at Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana’s office to announce details about the massive Shramadana campaign to be held in the Western Province on June 21.

He further said that persons who refuse to pay the fine will be prosecuted. “Those measures should be taken before the onset of the rainy season. People are aware of the measures which need to be taken for preventing dengue but they are not concerned enough to act on those methods, he said.

Dr Pradeep Kariyawasam said that a national policy should be formulated to clean our surroundings and make them free of mosquito breeding sites in the first week of April and during a week in October. This should be done before the onset of the rainy season. Western Province Entomologist Dr Subhashini Ariyapperuma pointed out that the public is of the opinion that it is government's responsibility to prevent dengue from spreading. "But this cannot be done only by the government.
