Viharas to be set up abroad


Prime Minister D M Jayarathne plants a sapling of the Jayasri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura for the proposed International Buddhist centre at Wisdom Park in Manila.

The establishment of Buddhist Viharas to mark the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi commenced in the Philippines capital of Manila on May 16 under the patronage of the Maha Sangha and Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.

The Prime Minister who spoke at the ceremony told the gathering that arrangements had been made to set up Buddhist Viharas in about 30 countries where there are no such Buddhist Viharas.

The function was attended by the Maha Sangha, the members of the Diplomatic corps, the Sri Lanka Ambassador in the Philippines Navalage Benet Cooray, the Prime Minister's Secretary S. Amarasekera and Private Secretary Anuradha Jayaratne.
