Sir John Tarbet Senior Championships:

Outstation athletes steal the limelight

Outstation athletes dominated the second day of the 81st Sir John Tarbet senior track and field athletic championships for the Milo Trophy which continued at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday. The best effort probably came from Ashan Jayawardena from Ananda National School, Chilaw where he created the only record of the day clearing a distance of 49.90 metres to clinch the boys under 16 discus throw event.

In addition the athletes from Ratnayake MMV, Walala put up a splendid performance to make their presence felt as they moved closer towards winning the overall championship.

M G Mapalage led the way with an effort of 3.30 metres in the boys under 20 pole vault final while N U Jayasundera also from Ratnayake MMV, Walala clocked 2 minutes 22.0 seconds to win the under 18 girls 800 metres final.

Ratnayake MMV, Walala continued their dominance in the middle distance events with J H Abeysinghe winning the under 16 boys 800 metres clocking 2.21.1 seconds and K A D Priyadarshani taking the under 20 girls 800 metres with a timing of 2.20.8 seconds.

Meanwhile R J M K Jayasekera brought more honours to Ratnayake MMV, Walala by winning the under 20 boys 800 metres returning a timing of 1.55.1 seconds and they also took the under 20 girls 100X4 relay event clocking 54.30 seconds.

Another encouraging performance came from R Adrian of Jaffna Central College as he went on to win the under 20 boys 200 metres event with a timing of 22.80 seconds.

St Joseph’s College Kegalle produced two winners with R M Ratnayake taking the under 18 girls 200 metres clocking 26.1 seconds and S R P Senanayake coming first in the under 20 girls 200 metres returning a time of 25.60 seconds.

The under 18 girls triple jump went to A I Kotuwegedera of Hathgampola MV with an effort of 11.30 metres. Surangi Silva of Sri Sumangala MV, Panadura clinched the under 16 girls long jump clearing a distance of 5.04 metres.

In the under 18 boys high jump final D G S Dassanayake of Dheerananda MV, Pilimatalawa put up a fine performance to win the title following an effort of 1.96 metres.

In the under 20 boys putt shot final W A G D Wickremarachchi of Rajasinghe MMV, Hanwella produced a splendid performance of 13.17 metres to win the title. In addition Venura Lakmal of Negombo South National College won the under 16 boys triple jump clearing 12.97 metres.

Meanwhile N G Madushanka of J R Jayewardena Central, Dhummalasuriya and C P Sevwandhi of Saranankara MMV clinched the under 20 boys and girls mini marathon title respectively.

Some of the other winners on the second day were Anjani Kulasinghe of Gateway College (U 20 girls long jump), D S Harshana of Gurukula MV (U 18 boys 800 metres), P N Janith of S Thomas’, Kotte (U 16 boys 800 metres), P L Hewage of Gateway College (U 18 girls 200 metres), N. P. Rambukwella of Christ King College (U 16 girls 200 metres), B S Saparamadu of Seventh Day Adventist International College (U 16 girls discus), Srinath Imtiasz of Buddhist Ladies College (U 16 girls putt shot) and K M Sachinthana of Nalanda College (U 16 boys 200 metres).

The event conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited will be concluded today.
