Bid to unearth sports stars in Northern Province

A sports talent identification camp for the Northern Province on the instructions of the Ministry of Sports will be held at the Vidyananda Vidyalaya grounds in Mullaitivu on May 14 and 15, 2011, with the Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage gracing this occasion as the chief guest.

Seventeen game events which have been identified are being popularized in the suburbs parallel to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Sportsmen and women from these areas are to be identified at the district level and brought to the national as well as the international arena. For this purpose, the Ministry of Sports has organized talent identification camps around the island. The talent identification camp for the Northern Province will be held in Mullaitivu covering all the districts of the Northern Province.

The Ministry of Sports will be taking steps to popularize sports such as cricket, rugby, football, tennis, swimming, and badminton which are limited to the urban areas to the suburbs. For this purpose, coaches for sports, project officers, and sports officers will be appointed at the divisional level. The Ministry of Sports states that for this to become a success, identifying sports persons through the sports talent identification camp will be of immense help.
