Damaging State properties:

University students remanded till Oct 29

The 21 University students arrested by the Police for forcibly entering the Higher Education Ministry premises and damaging the State properties were remanded till October 29 by the Colombo Magistrate Court.

The University students broke open the gates of University Grants Commission (UGC) and damaged window panes of the Ministry building. According to Police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody, eight out of 22 police officers who were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital and Police Hospital are still receiving treatment.

Colombo National Hospital sources confirmed that five Police officers and four University students were still receiving treatment.

The hospital staffer who was entangled in the clash between the Police and the students is receiving treatment at the hospital, the Hospital spokesman said. He said that their conditions are not serious.

Meanwhile, Inter University Students Union Convenor Udul Premaratne told the Daily News that almost all University students will participate in a series of protest campaigns against the indiscriminate attack on the students by the Police last Thursday.
