Local degrees for foreign students

The Higher Education Ministry will grant 200 scholarships for foreign students to follow local degrees next year.

The first batch would benefit students from China, Middle East and African countries.

The Ministry will improve infrastructure facilities of universities within the next five years to attract about 10,000 foreign students.

"It will be a good way to generate more foreign income. We hope to offer a degree for US $ 5,000 to foreign students," Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake said.

The Minister was addressing a ceremony to distribute computers, printers and photocopy machines valued at Rs 13 million to the South Eastern and Eastern Universities.

The Minister also gave permission to student unions to use the photo copy machines and printers for their academic needs and also handed over the management of the Trincomalee Campus canteen to students.

Minister Dissanayake also said that the Indian High Commissioner agreed to provide 50 buses and 50 jeeps to improve transport facilities at Universities.

He said that he plans to meet the Indian Higher Education Minister next month.
