New number plates for Govt vehicles

The Department of Motor Traffic has made preliminary arrangements to issue a different number plate to the vehicles imported by the Government institutions on the directive of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The public can identify the Government vehicles soon as the new number plate would be in blue colour.

According to Commissioner of Motor Traffic, B.D.L Dharmapriya, the Department can not issue new number series for Government vehicles as the numbering of vehicles has changed.

He said there is a practical problem when new number series are issued to Government vehicles. The Department will have to change the number when Government vehicles are purchased by public from auctions.

Dharmapriya added that this system will be effective only, if the number plates of existing vehicle fleet of the Government is changed.

He said he has no authority to direct other Government institutions to change the number plates of their vehicles.

He said that the Department can provide blue coloured number plates to existing Government vehicles provided that the Government takes a policy decision and necessary payment is made by the relevant institution.

He said the Government institution that imports new vehicles should bear the cost of new number plate which is estimated to cost over Rs. 2,800.
