‘Touch of Feminity in Parliament’
Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has sent us the
following clarification:
“The feature article published in the Ceylon Daily News issue of May
8, 2010 under the caption ‘Touch of Feminity in Parliament’ contains a
glaring omission notwithstanding the interesting nature of the article.
“There is no reference to Mrs. Sriyani Wijewickrama MP
Attorney-at-Law the elected Member of Parliament representing the
Digamadulla District a rural in the Eastern Province at the 2010 General
Election as a member of the UPFA.
“Mrs Sriyani Wijewickrama MP was elected under the banner of the UPFA.
She was a nominee of one of the constituent parties of the UPFA namely
by the MEP.
Her name should also have been included in the inset under the
subtitle UPFA.
“Incidentally to her credit Mrs Sriyani Wijewickrama MP stands as the
only women Member of Parliament who was elected born and bred in
Digamadulla District and the first to qualify as a women lawyer from the
District.
“Further more there is a mistake in the inset in the subtitle “17th
Parliament” The General Election of 2010 was held for the election of
members for the 7th Parliament of Sri Lanka.” |
