The All Island schools Seven-a-side soccer tournament for ‘Peace
Dream Cup’ will be played on May 1-3 in Trincomalee. The tournament
organised by Peace Dream Foundation an international organisation to
promote peace and the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association with the
intention of bridging the peace process through sports. These details
were disclosed by the organisers at a press briefing held at the St.
Benedict’s College Pavilion yesterday.
Minister of Co-operatives M.N. Abdul Majeed, Chairman Organising
Committee addressing the media said that this is a vital move taken by
the Schools Football Association to give an opportunity to the young
ones to see the Eastern Province.
Eastern Province with many development projects under way needs the
sports development too which will benefit everyone there.
For nearly three decades sports in Trincomalee was at a very lower
level as activities could not take place. With this sort of activity
moving to Trincomalee the youth get encouraged to take to sports.
This will help the whole country at large specially to find new
talent, said the Minister. According to the President of the SLSFA Rev.
Bro. Granwille Perera already 42 schools have confirmed their
participation from all parts of the country.
Those participating teams will be provided with facilities including
accommodation.
He further added the organisers expect more teams to come from
Northern Province, Batticaloa, Ampara and Nuwara Eliya districts.
The teams will be grouped with three each will play on a league basis
and the qualifiers too will play the second round on a league basis and
the third round is played on a knock out basis, said the President.
The tournament is sponsored by Peace Dream Foundation.
The winners will be awarded the Peace Dream Cup along with Rs. 50,000
while the first runner-up too is entitled to a trophy and Rs. 25,000.
