Shehan and Ishara win top awards

Shehan Ambepitiya (Gateway College) and Ishara Madurangi (Sri
Devananda College, Ambalangoda) won the Most Outstanding Sportsman and
the Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the year awards at the 16th annual
Milo Schools Colours Awards Ceremony held at the BMICH Colombo.
Heshan Unamboowe (Trinity College, Kandy) and Miniruwani Samarakoon
(Gateway College, Kandy) were adjudged the most promising sportsman and
most promising sportswoman of the year.
Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year Shehan Ambepitiya had a
remarkable performance in last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune,
India. He won the 100 metres and the 200 metres with two new meet
records and also ran the final lap in the Men’s 100x4 metres relay with
another record shattering run. He was crowned the fastest runner among
the Commonwealth countries.
Shehan finished seventh in the men’s 100m event at the World Junior
Games in Poland and won the Silver Medal in the 100 metres at the Asian
Junior Athletic Championship in Indonesia.
Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year Ishara Madurangi was the
best schools Table Tennis player in Sri Lanka. She represented Sri Lanka
at the World Table Tennis Championship in China and Asian T.T.
Tournament held in Singapore. She also captained Sri Lanka in the South
Asian Junior Schools Table Tennis Tournament in Pakistan and won two
Silver Medals and one bronze medal.
Most Promising Sportsman of the year was Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity
College, Kandy. Heshan was able to establish four national records in
the World Short Course Swimming Championship in Manchester, England last
year. At the Asian Schools Swimming Championships in Kuala Lumpur he won
a Bronze Medal and set a National Record.
Most Promising Sportswoman of the year ‘Miniruwani Samarakoon of
Gateway College, Kandy, who represented Sri Lanka and Captained the
women’s Team at the Asian Schools Swimming Championships won the 7th
place in the 100m and 200m Butterfly Events.
She represented Sri Lanka at the World Swimming Championships and
established a new short course national record.
Four hundred and eighty two boys and girls from 155 schools received
colours at this Awards Ceremony which was organised by Sri Lanka Schools
Sports Council and Ministry of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka
(Ltd) for 16th year. Chief Guest on the occasion was Minister of Higher
Education Prof. Vishwa Warnapala.
Senior Vice Presidents of Nestle Lanka (Ltd) Mohamed Hamsa, Norman
Kannangara, External Affairs Manager Nestle Lanka (Ltd), Bandula Egodage,
President of Sri Lanka Schools Sports Council L.K. Jayaweera, Secretary
Rohana Karunaratne, Director General Customs Sarath Jayathilake also
graced the occasion. |
