Conduct a peaceful election - Bishop Frank Marcus Fernando Bishop of Chilaw Frank Marcus Fernando yesterday requested all political party leaders to guide their followers for a peaceful election tomorrow. In a message addressed to all regional political leaders, the Bishop urged the voters to take the first step to maintain law and order and also not to violate election regulations during the polling day. The Bishop's message follows a horrendous day of violence on Sunday (02) in Wennappuwa where two UNP supporters were killed after police intervened to disperse a mob. The two UNP supporters were killed when police opened fire to disperse an unruly mob in Nainamadama. The mob, according to the Police, had attempted to attack the residence of Puttalam district PA Candidate Trevin Fernando. Puttalam district is among the highest violence ragged districts with eight killings and more than 200 election related incidents. On Sunday a convoy carrying former Deputy Minister Priyankara Jayaratne which was expected to escort former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike had been attacked by the UNP supporters in Chilaw yesterday. However, Mr. Bandaranaike arrived at Chilaw after the incident. Meanwhile, Wennappuwa Police yesterday controlled a mini-war erupted in Wennappuwa between UNP candidate Sugath Tissera and PA Candidate Trivin Fernando's supporters after firing about 120 rounds of ammunition to the sky and tear gas. Wennappuwa Police said that Sugath Tissera's convoy had been stoned by a supporter of Trivin Fernando and violence escalated thereafter. During the attack two supporters of Fernando had been killed and four of them have been seriously injured. Two neighbouring houses have also been attacked, Police said. |
