Curfew in A'pura

Anuradhapura Police imposed an indefinite curfew commencing 7.30 p.m. yesterday (Dec 2) in certain areas of North Central Province, following an escalation of election related violence where two people were killed as a result of clashes between UNP and PA supporters.

The region's top Police officer Ananda Jayasekera told the Daily News that the Army was deployed in the Anuradhapura District to help Police maintain law and order in the curfew-clamped suburbs of Kekirawa, Kalawewa, and Anuradhapura West.

'The curfew was imposed because of the high-level of election-related violence" Jayasekera said.

He said a gasoline station owned by an opposition candidate was attacked and he had succumbed to his injuries and 11 vehicles smashed by unidentified gunmen.

Anuradhapura Police said a PA supporter was killed in a bomb explosion as he was driving in a convoy following the violence in the area.
