UNP-LTTE link patently clear - Anura

Former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike responding to a statement by Prof. G.L. Peiris published in "The Island" of Thursday, November 15 says, the link between the UNP and the LTTE is more than patently clear to every citizen of this country except the professor.

In a letter addressed to the editor of the Island, Mr. Bandranaike states:

"Prof. G.L. Peiris had stated that I am 'contradicting' myself which according to him is my political style, in that I have at the last General Election as a UNP candidate, stated that there is no link between the UNP and the Tigers and that one year later I am saying the opposite by accusing the UNP of its connection with the LTTE.

"I am shocked that a man who has a title of professor and an author of several books on law has resorted to the lowest levels of political chicanery.

"At the last election there was no direct evidence of a UNP-LTTE link and therefore, I very rightly denied it. At this elections the link between the UNP and the LTTE is more than patently clear to every citizen of this country except the Professor.

"The MOU signed between the UNP and the Tamil parties which is still kept a secret, the statement made by former TULF MPs Mr. P. Joseph and Mr. R. Sampanthan and the Manifesto of the Tamil Alliance is more than a clear indicator of the close and deadly links between Peiris' new found party and the LTTE.

"I would like to remind him that he has very conveniently forgotten the fact that he himself as a PA candidate at the last General Elections accused the UNP about its links with the LTTE.

"Now when there is so much evidence of this link, Peiris chooses to kneel before his new found masters in the hope of getting the Finance Ministry."
