The Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka yesterday deplored in the strongest terms Monday's suicide bombing in Colombo that reportedly resulted in at least three deaths and wounded 16.

"Canada condemns this act of terrorism and urges calm as well as restraint from all parties in the lead up to December elections in Sri Lanka," said High Commissioner Ruth Archibald. "We offer our deepest sympathy to the victims and their families."

The High Commissioner also noted that today's attack was further evidence that the international community needed to enhance security cooperation in order to put an end to terrorist activities. She underscored that Canada was undertaking a number of measures both domestically and internationally toward this end.

The High Commissioner also took the opportunity to reiterate Canada's hope that the conflict in Sri Lanka will be resolved through a political settlement which satisfies the legitimate aspirations of all its citizens, regardless of language, ethnicity or religion while preserving the country's unity and territorial integrity.
