CP condemns attempt on PM's life

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka condemns with all vehemence the abortive attempt on the Prime Minister's life by a LTTE suicide bomber killing four people and injuring several others. The LTTE which has repeatedly resorted to such horrendous acts of terrorism at all elections has this time started with the commencement of the General Elections campaign, states a media release by the Communist Party of Sri Lanka.

It states "frustrated by its failure to make any gains on the battle front, threatened by an internecine power-struggle within the LTTE leadership and isolated by the rising tide of the world-wide anti-terrorist movement, the LTTE in a desperate attempt sought to infuse fresh hopes in their ranks through a new spate of political killings in the South.

"The LTTE thereby not only demonstrates its determination to exterminate the PA leaders prior to the General Election, but also conveys the intimidating message of their choice to the Tamil voters as to how they should exercise their preference at the forthcoming General Election. It is also a deliberate attempt on the part of the LTTE to whip up feelings of communalism in the South, an attempt which has always worked to the advantage of the LTTE strategy.

"The LTTE has now opened a second front operational during the General Election through the so-called newly set-up Tamil Alliance, clearly aimed at defeating the People's Alliance Government. This fits in well to the political agenda of the UNP which has signed a MoU with the Tamil Alliance."
